What is Thrifty Cosplay?

Thrifty Cosplay is my exploration of merging fashion and cosplay together while saving a buck!

Unfortunately, I’m not handy or creative enough to make cosplay outfits and I never showed interest in fashion since my style has always been T-shirts and jeans. Even though I have a petite stature, I figured I needed to start dressing more of my age but still keep my nerdy personality. Which is why I came up with the idea of Thrifty Cosplay!

The outfits are put together in a way that I still capture the character’s style. Either by the same look, or putting it into a more modern twist. I hope you all will enjoy my fashion and cosplay journey! I’m excited to show you my first attempt at this.

The Character: Magikarp Jump Trainer

Ever since I discovered about the mobile game, Magikarp Jump, I was surprisingly addicted to it. It was so easy to play because there was no skill involved.

Like literally no skill at all.

All you had to do was swipe and tap your way into leveling up your Magikarp.

I hated myself for it, but I couldn’t put it down for a good 2-3 months. It probably was one of the first app games where I completed the story. I couldn’t help but scream at the fact that you could lose your precious fish Pokemon to a hungry Pidgeotto!

Magikarp Jump: Are you a boy or a girl?

By just looking at the outfit, it looked so easy to put together. Honestly, I didn’t know where to start to find these pieces of clothing since I just searched through my favorite stores like Forever 21, H&M, and Charlotte Russe. With no luck, I had to turn to eBay and Amazon. The only luck I had last year was purchasing a plain red baseball cap on Amazon for less than $10.

It was so hard to find what I was searching for without breaking my wallet. But since then, this whole grand cosplay idea was put in the back burner…

UNTIL NOW!

The Thrifty Outfit

It wasn’t until a week ago where I was cleaning up my closet, I pulled out the red baseball cap. It took me a while to realize that I was working on completing this outfit, so I rushed over to my computer to start searching again.

As I was typing up again through Amazon to find these plain type clothing, I remembered that I had just started shopping around on ThredUp.com more often to save money and to upgrade my wardrobe.

I then tried my luck to find teal shorts and a blue hoodie and crossed my fingers they were plain enough to fit the look. I was actually surprised at the variety and the different brands I found and quickly start clicking the hearts to favorite them so that I could go back a look through my options.

Now me being a broke ass, I had to make sure that all of the items were under $30. The max I would pay for something would be $50, but c’mon, I was looking for some plain ass shorts and hoodie for now.

After looking through my options, I finally put the two items in my cart and with the satisfaction that it didn’t hurt my wallet, I was super excited to finally make this a tangible idea.

HERE’S THE RESULT!

Jempanada wearing Magikarp Jump Trainer thrifty cosplay

It’s freaking amazing how vibrant the colors are and it matched perfectly to the Magikarp Jump Trainer’s outfit! Luis said that it looked a bit baggy on me, but I explained that it was part of the look since the character was androgynous. I mean literally at the beginning of the game, Mayor Karp asks, “Are you a boy or a girl?” just like Professor Oak.

The next thing on my list is to get this Magikarp plush to carry around and this entire cosplay will be complete!

I may have to hem the waist since I realized that I’m a size 25 and not 26, so it’s a little baggy. I don’t need a wardrobe malfunction when I’m walking around in these shorts this summer.

The teal denim shorts are from Forever21, retail price was $20, and got them for $7.99. Then the blue hoodie is from New York & Company, retail price was $45, got them for $11.99. Honestly, thrifting is my new favorite thing when it comes to shopping and I don’t know if I should ever go back to retail shopping!

With all my excitement that I have for this look, I’ve asked a friend who is a cosplay photographer, ArtsyRaccoon, to do a little shoot when we have time. Planning to head to the park and do so some iconic moments like having Magikarp tackle a tree or me simply carrying it around.

This was a very simple cosplay idea, and I’m finally happy that it’s coming together. I can’t wait to start putting together other thrifty cosplay outfits in the future. My next attempt will be Cowboy Bebop’s Faye Valentine. I already have a few items together, so just need a few more accessories to complete it!
